First Experiences Integrating PC Distributed I/O Into Argonne's ATLAS Control System

چکیده
∗ Undergraduate Research Participants Abstract The roots of ATLAS (Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System) date back to the early 1960’s. Located at the Argonne National Laboratory, the accelerator has been designated a National User Facility, which focuses primarily on heavy-ion nuclear physics. Like the accelerator it services, the control system has been in a constant state of evolution. The present real-time portion of the control system is based on the commercial product Vsystem [1]. While Vsystem has always been capable of distributed I/O processing, the latest offering of this product provides for the use of relatively inexpensive PC hardware and software. This paper reviews the status of the ATLAS control system, and describes first experiences with PC distributed I/O.

The Relational Database Aspects of Argonne's ATLAS Control System
∗ Undergraduate Research Participants Abstract Argonne’s ATLAS (Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System) control system comprises two separate database concepts. The first is the distributed real-time database structure provided by the commercial product Vsystem [1]. The second is a more static relational database archiving system designed by ATLAS personnel using Oracle Rdb [2] and Corel Parad...
متن کاملBuilding A High Performance Parallel File System Using Grid Datafarm and ROOT I/O
Sheer amount of petabyte scale data foreseen in the LHC experiments require a careful consideration of the persistency design and the system design in the world-wide distributed computing. Event parallelism of the HENP data analysis enables us to take maximum advantage of the high performance cluster computing and networking when we keep the parallelism both in the data processing phase, in the...
متن کاملCollaborative 3D Visualizations of Geo-Spatial Information for Command and Control
We present a prototype command and control system that is based on view-dependent co-located visualizations of geographically related data. It runs on a 3D display environment, in which several users can interact with view consistent visualizations of information. The display system projects four independent stereoscopic image pairs at full resolution upon a custom designed optical screen. It u...
متن کاملThe ATLAS Level-1 Trigger: Status of the System and First Results from Cosmic-Ray Data
The ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be exposed to proton-proton collisions from beams crossing at 40 MHz. At the design luminosity of 10 cm s there are on average 23 collisions per bunch crossing. A threelevel trigger system will select potentially interesting events in order to reduce the read-out rate to about 200 Hz. The first trigger level is implemented in customb...
متن کاملA Distributed Open Software Router: Analysis and Architectures
The first generation routers were essentially general purpose computers performing packet processing in software. They executed routing protocols on UNIX like operating systems and the same processor was shared for all the different routing functions. With the advent of faster and more complex networks routers evolved from open and easily programmable computers to closed and specialised boxes. ...
